I have got my ticket to Accra booked, and was considering what kind of jobs in Ghana are available now.

You see, since the discovery of oil, there have been numerous big organizations coming to Ghana and constructing drilling and exploration sites to find where the oil is, and refine it straight inside of the country.

That's why when I came to America, I wanted to focus on engineering, and getting my mechanical engineering degree from SUNY had been a very essential decision to make.

The thing is, in my village, there are no mechanical engineers. I am the first one, and the money and time it has taken to become a mech eng is something which was challenging for me and my family. Actually, my mother had barely enough cash to fly me here, but with the help of an uncle, and some friends, I was able to fly to New York and enroll in the mechanical engineering program.

The difficult task now is to go back to Accra, to get the present jobs in Ghana, and find the right place for a mechanical engineer to work. Perhaps Hughes is a good employer. That is what I need to find out now - who are the good employers, who address their workers perfectly.

You see, in Ghana, working in undesirable conditions is not that unusual. There are many without work, and if they don't like you, there's always another person to take your place. They generally make you work difficult, and don't usually pay the rate you would expect, since there are so many workers eager to get your job.

With the help of my sister, I have a place to stay in Accra, and from there, many of the oil companies have head offices there, and I can send out my curriculum vitae and make the perfect impression on them. I am a good student, with a capable degree, and studied at a good school that is recognized by these companies, so I think I am well placed to be interviewed and employed by them.

It has been a long journey, but one that will change the way of life for my family, and being the one that makes the difference in their lives is something that makes me really happy, although I have worked so hard that all I wish to do sometimes is sleep.

If the oil companies don't hire me, there are also some United Nations jobs I could apply for. My uncle is in Rome, employed by FAO, in the fishing division, and he says they hire mechanical engineers when there are specific projects on the go. So there are lots of jobs in Ghana for a person like me.
